This interdisciplinary research project explores the intersection of choreography, food culture, and communal eating in order to address the absence of physical interaction and community bonds in contemporary information-driven society. By designing unique culinary dishes, utensils, and unorthodox physical movements, the project challenges traditional dining etiquette and encourages individuals to rely on each other for feeding. In doing so, the communal dining place becomes more than a shared space—it becomes an active and radical setting for “co-eating,” where people are invited to support one another in bringing food to each other’s mouths. Through this act, deeper connections between individuals, communities, and the biosphere can be forged, redefining ethical boundaries and transforming societal norms. Collaborating with experts in dance, biology, and food studies, the research ultimately culminates in an immersive dining experience where participants and foods serve as integral elements in creating a transformative, communal encounter for all.
In this creative process, the project also held a Butoh workshop framed by contemporary performance methods, aiming to uncover unexpected movements and insights into edible materials and their broader environment. The workshop’s outcome took the form of “Dining, dried,” a presentation that included a self-painting spot with 16 dried vegetables and fruits powder as a colouring, your-partner-can-taste-dried-pastries exhibition and a live performance, offering an early glimpse of the project’s potential to reshape how we eat, interact, and connect with one another.
